Newbie qn. Out of Warranty (Fit 2011) - How to add insurance?
Folks,
I am new to owning cars, and am a new (used car) buyer - just purchased a 2011 Fit Base model (~77k miles) that's out of warranty (yes, powertrain warranty as well).
How does one go about adding MBI (mechanical breakdown insurance) as Geico (my insurer) calls it? Geico only offers 15-month/new car coverage, so that option is out.
Any advise is much appreciated.
Thank you.

I have never purchased a third party car warranty and I am in my 60’s. From what I have heard they are a total waste of money and very selective of what they pay for repairs. The Fit is a very reliable car if you do basic maintenance. Bottom line don’t purchase one.

Double this^^. The second gen fit is a tank. JulianNacho is north of 540k on his and it's yet to strand him. Basic maintenance every 100k, along with transmission drain and fills every 36k and it'll tick over forever.

I would self-warranty as the car is quite reliable. Put some cash aside every month in an envelope for maintenance and repair.
It seems the spark plugs were improperly torqued from the factory. So you should replace them and torque properly; there are plenty of posts here on that issue. I would do that sooner rather than later as the damage gets expensive.
At 100k miles, Bernadi Honda told me to adjust the valves; the exhaust valves can get tight so don't skip that service.
Then the fluids and filters. Do this if you don't have documented proof of scheduled maintenance. You can ignore the fluids changes but you will pay the price down the line (e.g. expensive repairs and shortened lifespan). These cars are robust.

That's the tricky part with insurance. You have to pay the premiums, but they don't have to pay the claims.

@Fiting & @Red 05 Thanks for the detailed info. on what to check for & maintain - and the envelope system. @fit09 That's the wisdom that comes from experience, right? Thank you.
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I will simply enjoy the car and put away money for maintenance - and not get the 3rd party insurance.

Lots of good advice. I bought the extended wty and a few days later I cancelled and got refund. I then set up a separate bank account so that each time used my debit card $5 went into fund. Now 11yrs of ownership I have had no major problems and $5 grand in account.
