MTF Capacity?

How much Manual Transmission Fluid does a 13 Fit take?

Couldn't find it in the manual.

Third result down (using your keywords): https://www.amsoil.com/lookup/auto-a...7-m/us-volume/

"NOTES: (1) Honda Manual Transmission Fluid, P/N 08798-9031. This fluid is backwards compatible with Honda Manual Transmission Fluid, P/N 08798-9016.
CAPACITIES: SP4M (5-SPD) 3.2 pints"

I'll let you figure out the conversion from pints to quarts; I imagine that's not too difficult.

You'll need to buy two quarts. You are going to use about 1.70 quarts. That is my experience (and I've changed out my MT oil half a dozen times).

Coffee, do you see a noticeable difference in color / texture / metal content in the manual tranny fluid changes?

Good question. I do not see a noticeable difference in color/texture/metal content in my MT fluid changes. I expected to see a difference, but there isn't any.

I change my MT fluid about every 10k mi. (or every third engine oil change). When the fluid is too old, the shifting becomes noticeably rough. When the fluid is fresh, the car is a real pleasure to drive and the gearbox is one of the car's best features.

How about you?

Coffee: Interesting that you 'feel' the MTF go bad. I do the ATF changes in our Civic and FIT every 30k miles and 'candy apple' see-through red (Honda DW-1) when I put it in and stinky brown / black when it comes out but we never have a 'sense' that the AT's are shifting better / worse. Years ago, I replaced all the fluids on a 2000 4WD Dodge Dakota 5sp / limited slip rear with Red Line synthetic then Royal Purple when rear was rebuilt (pinion bearing) and really didn't notice a difference. Sold to a brother at 130k miles and he recently junked it due to major breakage in tranny at 145k miles. Maybe I should have changed the MTF more often like you.

Spike: Modern oil formulations consist of a base oil plus additives. The base oil can last you a good, long time, but it is the additives that do the work, and it is the additives that wear out (or become exhausted or however you want to think about it). This is one reason why infrequent oil changes are a bad idea.

Well-Known Story: When the man who "invented" the Honda S2000 was asked what owners should do to maintain their cars, he recommended changing the MT fluid. No one listening at that moment was really thinking about MTF, so his statement sort of stuck out. The Fit has an awesome MT gearbox, but the S2000 had something like a race car gearbox. It was awesome-ness to the Nth degree.

Note: The only stink I ever got off of a car fluid change was the rear differential. That stuff can really be nasty when it gets old.

Basically this.

Or do what I do: Buy two quarts, use entire quart bottle, use second bottle until the damn thing pours out of the fill hole.

That's right, Julian. That's how this job is done, whether you're a Honda tech or a driveway mechanic. The case is "Full" to the appropriate level when it starts to pour out of the fill hole.
