Also when you check your oil, if you keep the dipstick tilted the wrong way, then some of the oil will flow towards the MAX marker hole and you will falsely believe you have more oil than in reality. Always leave the dipstick pointing down when you read the oil level -> I've seen many people keeping it horizontal or pointing upwards.
Lastly, you should always warm up the engine & oil before draining it, because it flows much better and you will get most of it out. If the oil is cold, and it's conventional oil (which doesn't flow as good as synthetic), and it's worn out oil that is naturally more viscous and "clumpy", then you will not actually remove most of the old oil during the standard drain interval.
Since our cars only need 3.5 quarts and jugs come in 5 quarts, I always dump a bit of new oil into the engine after it drained for 5-10 minutes, just to "flush" out any remaining crud on the bottom of the sump. I only add the drain bolt back after the "flush" completed draining. This is definitely not necessary and only meant for OCD people.
