Back to basics

I'm new to car audio but not home audio. I don't need earth shattering base, or an impressive set-up, just a decent stereo system. I would prefer to keep the factory look of a double din and the ipod functionality in the dash...everything else is up for grabs.

What should I do, and in what order?

h/u-suggestions?

speakers-suggestions?

tweeters-suggestions?

small amp-suggestions?

Thanks!

Alpine source unit, focal miss and highs, a 5 channel amp such as arc audio, shallow mount sub many out there a elemental designs would work well. I suggested high end gear because if you are a home Audio nut, you know there are brands that are worth the cost. If you have a budget in mind I can come up with something else.

Would a small amp and new speakers help the sound or does the h/u destroy any chances of that? I would prefer to keep the factory look and the usb hook up in the dash.

Thanks!

The factory headunit is to my standard subpar, sure it has usb control but the sheer quality I hear in my Alpine CDA-9887 is MILES better. You could start with a doubledin h/u and new speakers as a start, but I would not do coaxials upfront like some do. Put components in, factory locations aren't the best but they work, it's what I used and sounds pretty good. If you are gonna use an iPod then usb is kinda moot in point, I use a classic iPod 80gb and it sits in my glove box out of the way and the only time I take it out is to add more music to it.

So the ipod doesn't have to plug in to the front? I'm confused, how can it sit in your glovebox? Thanks!

It connects via a fullspeed cable to the alpine, I then just routed the cable into the glove box and whammo the ipod sits in the glove box. Not a difficult thing to do at all really.
