I would think that it's possible in theory. Biggest question would be why? The 6-speed is only different between 4-6 with it's 6th being the same as our 5th.

I'd like better gearing, but the GK's 6-speed isn't really better for most uses.

just curious... OP .... have you ever test driven a gk5 6 spd?

and ... if yes.... what are your thoughts on cruising at highway speeds while in 6th gear?

The 6-speed will not give you a gear on top of our 5th. It has the exact same overdrive. In other words, exact same rpm at highway speeds.

You'll just be doing more shifting with the same end result.

Swapping to the final drive from a Civic Hybrid is, in theory, possible, but doubtful that it's a good move either. We're kind of stuck with bad first and fifth gear ratios as far as I know.

Getting yourself a taller wheel/tire combo might be a better solution to solving buzzy cruising rpms.
Of course, you will likely also see worse acceleration....

The 5speed from which factory generation/model? None of this thread means anything without model numbers.

The OP had mentioned he didn't like the buzzy/high RPM cruising in 5th gear... But since the 6th gear is at the same ratio as the 5th gear of the 5-speed, that won't help.
An alternative way to get taller gearing (and thus lower RPMs when cruising) is to opt for a bigger circumference wheel/tire combo to "mimic" a taller gear ratio.

But yes, the original question was about transmissions!

I used to complained about the gearing too and thought 6th needed to be taller. But now that i have had the car for almost 6years it is just about right. When you are by yourself in the flats it seems too short. But once you load up to capacity and in the mountains you are glad the gears are short. Hell even on the flats with 5people in the car it has a hard time.
