Broken Left front drive shaft
#21
Just wanted to post a heads up for those with older & high mileage Fits. I have an 2007 Honda Fit Sport which I bought new in April 2006. It has 245500 miles on it and until a year ago was my daily driver. This is now my son's car (senior in high school) and he's been driving it for about 6 months.
Just this weekend while backing out to the driveway, the Fit just stops and when put in drive or reverse the car has a loud thumping coming from the front end (but engine starts & revs just fine)but won't move. I first checked the AT fluid- ok there. Then jacked up the car and noticed the left front drive shaft was broken in two! The drive shaft that was inside the boot closest to the transmission had rusted down to a thin strip of metal. My mechanic said that over the years of driving in winter salt must have built up inside the boot to cause the corrosion on the drive shaft and finally failed. Relatively cheap fix-$350 for flat bed ride and repair.
So if you have an older Fit and live where the roads are salted you may want to check this out. We got lucky with this happening in the driveway & not on the highway.

Should I go to Honda?
I also got the safety recall notice. But in 2018 while in an intersection, when I stopped and started, the right shaft broke. About six months later, in another intersection, the left shaft broke. I replaced both shafts after the incidents. I replaced them with cheaper OEM shafts, not Honda brand.Should I still go to Honda dealer?

Are they replacing the full axle assembly or literally only the shaft with the poor protective coating?
My 2007 which was deemed covered is at the stealership right now and I got a call:
Service Guy: The technician doesn't want to do the service because your driver front wheel bearing is loose.
me: Loose how exactly? I just had that, the hub and knuckle replaced last year.
Service Guy: who did the work?
me: Val's down the street. Do you have a quote for the wheel bearing
Service Douche: $700.....
me: I'm about 10 mi away, no car to get there at the moment could you please send me a picture of what you're referring to? Also, anyway you can replace the axle at least and I can get the wheel bearing serviced after? I live in the city and this would save me another 45 minute trip out there.
Service Guy: okay i'll send you a text.
Here's what they sent.....for "loose wheel bearing" am I going insane or does this seem really stupid? They sent a picture of the axle/cv joint, which is probably getting replaced by this recall...
