RPMs dropped really low - when coming to a stop
Hi,
I'm not exactly new the Fit Freak. I've been browsing this forum forever. Just got around to making an account today since I've run into a problem that (seemingly) no one has.
Well it's similar to others but not exactly.
My Fit is a 2008 Sport with the AT. Has about 113k miles.
Today while coming back from school, I noticed as I came to a full stop at the signal, the RPMs had dipped all the way around the 200-300 range and the car was shuddering as if about to stall, within a second the RPM's were back up to idle. Didn't happen afterwards.
My CEL is on, and the code read as "multiple cylinder misfire, 3 and 4" and it has been on for the past few weeks, goes and comes. Never really had a problem until today.
I've gotten the coil packs and spark plugs changed about 6-7 months ago, but that was for a much more major problem, boggy RPMs, stutters, etc.
Could it be that the same problem has occurred again (coil packs)? I mean these weren't the same symptoms last time, but who knows.

The car has plenty of power when it isn't coughing... on startup, I see it idle smoothly at 900 RPMs initially, but then the engine warms up and the ECU goes for 600 RPMs and it starts kicking.
I had a flat tonight. I changed the tire to the donut toy spare, and I limped it home. On the way, it got the hiccups, and I realized that the transmission was kicking in when the ECU tried to raise the idle. The car was jerking when it should have been idling. My problem may have been tranny (doesn't disengage well at idle). If It doesn't do it in neutral, that would be a big clue, or if the tranny fluid level is off...
But I don't need a tranny problem that's hard or expensive to fix. Wish me luck tomorrow.
Anybody have an idea why the tranny would cut in with an idle less than 900 RPM?

I had the manual trans 08 sport, did the same thing. Would die when I came to a stop, RPMs dropped real low, sputter and die. I went through the whole shebang of trying to correct it and turned out adjusting the valves was the only way to correct this. After adjusting the valves it ran great, no dying when coming to a stop.
I did notice when it started dying the lack of power to get up and go, so that is one tell tale of valves needing adjustments as well.

Compression is my first thought. Are the plugs torqued to spec (not leaking pressure)? You may want to check compression to see if you're getting lower compression due to valves, piston wear, etc.
What coil packs did you get? I've had numerous Mazdas, BMW, and Hondas not like those cheap coils that the auto parts and eBay stores carry (low cost ones that are not Denso or Delco). In fact BMW has a TSB that says if a fresh replacment of Bosch coil on plugs continues to "fail" resulting in a misfire, replcement with LT1 coils used on the small block V8s using Delco.

Incorrect plugs, cheap coils and amateur installation cause symptoms which mimic transmission failure.
