auto trans wont shift into 5th gear

Ok this happened once after I changed the auto trans fluid this past summer. 2008 Fit sport 50K miles. I drained and refilled the trans 3 times. Using Honda auto trans fluid of course from Honda dealer. About a week later I was driving home and the auto trans wouldn't go into top gear 5th. I stopped the car and tried putting it into paddle shift mode. Would do anything in that mode. I shut car off then restarted and Now it could go into paddle shift mode and allow all 5 gears to work plus the normal D worked with all gears now. When it happened the "D" was flashing.

I put it to a fluke and forgot about it. BUT just tonight it did it again. Of course in nasty snowy conditions. I heard something about a switch on outside on tranny that might be problem?? Its winter time so forget about me doing anything, no garage. Off to dealer. Any idea what it might be and cost to fix?? not sure I should tell them that I drained and refilled trans this past summer. They will just say I did something. It was a straight forward job. drain trans, refill drive a little refill repeat.

Flashing "D"? Won't shift? "S" mode doesn't work? Check out the link below:

Thanks. I went through all the threads. Didn't find one with a pictures of were the exact location of the switch is. But one guy said it was from under neath on driver side of tranny. Another guy gave a link to the part with a drawing of whole trans with switch. Looks like it just screws into trans and simply plug connection to some wires. I should have replaced it in the summer but I thought it was a one time event. Darn it all. Maybe can use a friends garage to change it myself. $300 bucks for parts and labor is crazy high. Its an 1/2 hour job on a lift. Part is 34 bucks. Looking at this link Check if this part fits your Honda - Honda Parts Now
it looks like the location on trans would be driver side near front end of car. Part #9
Just for others I will report back what I end up doing and if I replace it I will snap a pic of it on trans.

Guess I should have done a search flashing D rather than auto trans wont shift into 5th. Didn't find anything with that search.

That's the cure, for me anyway. Yup, here's the part number -> 28600-RPC-003.

Ordered part

I figure its worth a try 45 bucks for the part and new washer plus shipping. I can use my friends garage to do the job. I think I can get it from the top. One hand only but that's all I need. It looks like there is a plastic cover over electrical plug connection. Iam guessing that pulls straight off backwards then under that there MIGHT be some kind of locking clip holding electric plug connector to the switch. Once I get that off then its just a matter of a open end wrench or maybe a deep well socket to loosen and unscrew switch. Not sure if I will lose any tranny fluid but I will try and be quick about getting new switch started into threaded whole. Don't want to make a mess on friends garage floor. Hopefully that cures problem. Right now I can use the car as its shifting into high fine now.

You shouldn't get any fluid leaks. Pretty straightforward. Good luck!

Good to now fluid wont leak out. Just hoping this fixes the problem and it never comes back after that. I wasn't thrilled last night as the snow was coming down harder as I drove along then had to stop and shut car off to get it to go into high gear.

replaced part today

I replaced the part today. About a 30 minute job. Have to get it from underneath. BUT no reason to take off any plastic shields. Hardest part was getting the plug undone from the sensor. Its just a single wire. From the size of it I thought there were be several wires but its just one. The pin connector is offset not in the middle so the plug only goes on one way. Used an craftsman 22mm open end wrench, 7/8 inch would work too. Remember when buying the part to get a new washer. Its like the washers you get from Honda for the oil pan for oil changes. Its a one time use washer so get a new one with the part.

Oh trans fluid does indeed come out when you remove it so be ready with the new part before you completely unscrew the old one. Lost about half a shot glass of course right onto my chest.

I will report back in say 3 months to see if it fixed the problem. As it didn't happen often just 2 times before in a 6 month period.

its been over a month now

Well since i did the job its been a little over a month now and my trans has shifted no problem. goes into 5th gear and no blinking D. So for me it looks like it has worked. At least so far. Remember mine was that the trans wouldnt shift into 5th gear, which is when the D started flashing and set an engine code.

Iam pretty sure after 2008 Honda put a new transmission into the Fit but I could be wrong on that. BUT if it is the same auto trans its part number 9 on this link below
