Check Engine Light

When I turn the key on, the CEL goes on and after starting the car it goes off. When I tried to check the codes with two different readers (OTC and Snap On) it shows no communication. All the fuses are good. Is there a way to jump the pins for codes? Any thoughts? Thanks.

The light, and the other indicators, come on when you start up so that you (and your state inspectors, etc.) know the bulb is OK. Otherwise, there's no way to distinguish between everything being fine and something being wrong with the bulb on the fritz (or removed by an unscrupulous repairman or whatever).

Been using an INNOVA 3100 Code Reader for 2 years now, at Walmart for $100 taxes included. Works perfectly. From time to time especially on very long road trips, Toronto to Key West, FL, I get the check engine light ON, no big deal, anytime I have time just shut off the engine, hook up the device under the steering wheel, turn the ignition key ON (NOT THE ENGINE!!!) and within 10 sec I get the Code, ALWAYS P0420. Most likely that's the error code in your case as well. NO BIG DEAL, it's just a GENERIC code with no impact on fuel consumption or anything else on the car. Then I simply DELETE the damn check engine light off the dashboard.
