Last two fillups. The first one shows the virtue of as large of a sample as possible. Those 70 miles were all short stop and go hops. No long city miles like parkways or extended drives. The second was almost all highway miles at 75 - 80 mph. As I expected, the road trip goosed the overall average up to 28.0 mpg.

Thank you for continuing to update this thread OP, I enjoy comparing our cars as they are very similar. A few things I've noticed which I found interesting;

1. The 'winter blend' of gas seemed to affect both of us at roughly the same time, but it whalloped my average and it seemed to only have a slight effect on yours, this could be temperature related too, big difference between TN and Canada.

2. You have cheap gas! You are averaging over a dollar per gallon less than what I have over the past year.

Rollie, I'll take your average over my cheaper gas any day. Don't know how the dollars and cents settles out, but I don't like gas stations!

Anyway, here's my most recent fillup. I meant to mention that right before my last road trip, I topped off my oil. It was exactly halfway between the marks, which I assume is about 1/2 quart. Also, I checked my tires. They were mostly up to 40 psi, so I bled them down to 36.

What wallops my average is a combination of hills plus a rather slippy 1st gear. I have one hill that I get stuck on on red lights at least 3 or 4 times a week that has to really screw with the mph. I really have to slip the clutch on that one.

 

Rollie, I forgot that you guys use a different gallon than we do. When I convert, turns out that our mileage is similar, although yours is at least 1 mpg better than mine.

 

Surprisingly we are paying the same per mile.

I'm running my tires at 40 PSI cold, sidewall says 44 max, I haven't had any uneven wear issues so far and have used this pressure on my others cars without problems.

Weird that there's so much difference in averages though. I guess the hills/slippy 1st gear really kills the mileage more than even I suspected.

 

From 6.30. Just hit $1300.5 in fuel costs after 11,035 miles in 13 months. $.11 per mile in gas.

I'm going to experiment with not using 5th gear in city driving. I think that using it might be inefficient with the low rpms. I've used it a lot mainly because the car still runs pretty smoothly, even at the lower rpms, but I'm starting to wonder if it might be impacting efficiency.

Any thoughts about that? I would think that as long as the engine doesn't cog, the fewer the rpms at a given speed, the less gas is used for the same distance. But that's not taking engine management into account.

Down 1.1 mpg from last time. But UP 0.4 on the average mpg. Still hovering at 28 mpg.

80% A/C use. Also, about 50 miles in, I stopped using 5th gear in town. I was curious if it made a difference. We'll see if it makes any difference. So far, it seems not to have made a difference either way. We'll see after a couple of cycles. It sure is hard to break old habits though.

 

This morning. Looks like a steadily downward trend in mileage since I stopped using 5th gear in the city. So I'm going back to using it.

I've meant to do a followup to this to say that the previous post is the last one, other than this one. I am no longer tracking mileage. I think that this has been a pretty good snapshot of actual, real world mileage.

The few fillups that I've done since have only confirmed the results. I think that there has been a broad enough data set through all seasons

I hope this has given some realistic data that people can use when they are considering buying a GD.

It's obviously lower than what some have claimed, in some cases, a lot. It is lower than the EPA estimate. But it is documented down to the gallon. Living in a hilly environment obviously takes its toll, as well as the majority of the miles occurring on short hops. Perhaps a sometimes slightly slippy first gear impacts as well.

Still, all things considered, when you factor in the above, I think that this shows that the Fit is a good car for mileage. Even under ideal conditions, there are obviously better cars for mileage out there. But few are as practical, comfortable, well-built, and fun to drive. I haven't had a single mechanical problem or problems with fit and finish (no pun intended). No peeling plastic bits or paint, no issues with power accessories, etc. The battery is on the way out, and I've had to be jumped off a couple of times, but that is just an issue with the battery that came with the car. It's almost time for a replacement.

Thanks for the data. I recently bought my fit(10 months ago). When I was looking on this forum to determine fit's mpg initially, I saw people saying about 35 to even 45mpg.
I thought that realistically, I would be OK with 33mpg and not worry about sipping on gas the whole time I'm driving.
Unfortunately, this wasn't the case. My average mpg has been 24-29 depending on ac, traffic and mix of speeds.
Best I've ever gotten was 100% highway at 70mph the whole time with another passenger. No AC.
It was 31mpg.

 

Teleburst, thank you for such great information. I'm rather surprised the Fit does not make it to 30 mpg on average under realistic driving situations. I just purchased a 2007 Sport, and I'm smiling from ear to ear every time I drive the car because of all the money that I am saving from maintenance to insurance premiums.

 

Check my sig. Short trips in stop and go traffic are a killer! Best I got was 38 mpg on straight 100% highway.

 

I think it's the hilly terrain. I live at the bottom of a hill. The city is pretty hilly overall, sometimes sneaky hilly. But once a week I have to climb a really steep hill. It goes to the highest point in the county. Add to that all of the short hops and it's a killer.

 

My best was 44 mpg on a 100 mile interstate hop. No A/C and mostly 65 mph with cruise control.
