This morning. Up 0.6 mpg. But also a higher percentage of highway driving than usual. Hopefully in the next few months I'll do a valve adjustment and see what effect it has. I'll probably wait until I get out of the winter gas and 5 - 10 tankfuls of summer gas to make sure that I'm comparing apples to apples. It wouldn't do to do the valve adjustment right after the changeover and I'm just not prepared to do it right now.

And I got what I could get. Hence the Fit. I'm happy with it. At around 8000 miles a year, we're not talking about that much savings over the additional cost of a hybrid. Maybe if I were piling on the miles...

 

I can see how you'd be confused from that shot. There aren't any fog lamps. That's because this is a repaired front and I guess the previous owner never bothered to install them. But it has all of the body cladding, the rear spoiler and the wheels.

 

Yeah I noticed the skirts, lol. She looks pretty good without the fogs, though.

I have averaged 35-37 mpg consistently since new in Feb 2008. Now with 176K miles about 80% highway driving.

 

While I usually take undocumented claims with a grain of salt, with such a high percentage of highway miles, this seems reasonable, or close to it. When I had mostly highway miles, I averaged low 30s. I had a high of 44.6 on one 100 mile stretch (filled up right before the run and refilled upon exiting).

The majority of my miles are city miles (60/40). The hills don't help either.

Original Poster, in your 1st post you said you had a sport in the title. It's a base or sure look like it to me. The bumper is surely from a base. Reason why I ask is that a base does better mpg.

 

It's a Sport. It has the wheels, the side skirts, the spoiler, etc. It was in an accident before I bought it. That's the bumper that they put on for whatever reason.

As a reminder - I live in a hilly city. I fill up to the first click off of the pump. When summer comes along, I'll be noting the percentage of A/C. This is a 5-speed.

30% A/C Use

 

Here's the chart of all my fillups since purchase. You can see some interesting trends. There's a definite learning curve at the beginning, although that big spike is simply a Nashville-Mobile road trip. The other slight bumps are also due to some extended highway driving. I'll have several road trips coming up in the coming weeks which will drive the average MPG up. Notice how consistent the mileage has become in the last 3rd of ownership. For some reason, winter had a few variations here and there.

I'll be taking a road trip to Atlanta next Thursday. I'll be tracking a short tank because I want to fill up right before the trip. So the next reading will be lower than usual because it will be 100% city driving (probably only about 4 gal. or less). However, the next one is going to be quite a spike (Nashville to Atlanta is 250 miles). If I get 40mpg, that will only be a little more than half a tank since I don't fill up to the top on the neck (10 gal. is sniffing fumes when doing the first click method like I do). Since I won't be doing much city driving (I'm going to a concert and coming right back afterwards), I probably won't have to fill up again until I get close to Nashville.

I'm just glad that I'm not driving down there THIS weekend.

So, watch for two quick updates. One lower than usual and one very high.

 

After ~6,000, just checked my oil (yeah, I don't do it as often as I should) and found the level halfway between indicators. I went ahead and topped off. Not worried about oil consumption as that's not particularly unusual for 100k+ cars. Just wanted to note it.

BTW, I use Castro 5w-30 Syntec. If I hit 111k by winter, I might give 5w20 a shot just to see if it makes any difference in mileage in the real world. We had an unusually harsh winter for Nashville (as many did) and our summers aren't usually overly hot, so it will be an interesting test, especially since winter mileage took a noticeable hit. Most of that is probably due to winter gas but it will be interesting to see if there's any improvement, even slight, with the thinner oil.

Since I will be taking three road trips this summer totalling about 2000 highway miles, I'll probably hit 111k by winter.

I'll make a note when I make the change.

 

Here are the two fillups during my road trip from Nashville to Atlanta. The first includes 30 miles of interstate driving. The second in includes ~30 miles of city driving. This includes around 10 miles of Atlanta city driving as well as about 20 miles of slow interstate driving around Monteagle which features some 5% grades with some insane semi-truck drivers passing other semis on those grades, which bottled up traffic for about 20 miles.

I usually ran between 75 and 80mph on the interstate.

The cumulative effect raised my overall average .2 to 27.9. I have a Nashville to Lexington, KY run two weeks from yesterday, so I expect to hit 28mpg after that trip.
