Latest fillup (miles, gallons, MPG, city driving percentage):
11/2/13 243.0 9.15 26.6 3.099 85%
Loss of 3.1 mpg over the last fillup. I suspect that it's a combination of the switch to winter gas coupled with some bad luck with heavy traffic and even more really short hops and about 25 less highway miles this fillup cycle. If I rebound 1 or 2 mpg, I'll assume that winter gas is going to cost around a couple of mpg.

Fillup the other day: (Miles, gallons, mpg, price per gallon, % of city driving)
11/16/13 127.0 5.46 23.3 2.959 75%
This was an interesting fillup which highlights something that I think is worth pointing out. As you can see, MPG took a bit of a hit. This was a little over a half of a "real fillup". Consequently, the driving sample was skewed. The city driving was probably almost all stop and go, whereas I usually get my share of parkway-type driving in a typical tank (sub interstate driving). Had I gone to the usual 8 - 9 gallon fillup, I'm sure it would have been better. It could have very easily gone the different way, where most of the driving was longer range, non stop and go driving.
To get a true feel for MPG, you really do have to look at the total amount of driving and not cherry pick and highlight really good or really bad driving segments.
PS, the reason I filled up so early was because I had a MAPCO $.06 discount that was about to expire, and I was going to be able to finally buy gas for under $3 a gallon. So I saved a whopping $.30!

Today: (Miles, gallons, mpg, price per gallon, % of city driving)
208.0 8.10 25.7 3.039 75%
As you can see, up 2.4 mpg from the last fillup, even with the same % of city driving. This points out the smoothing effect that a larger sample gives you. It would have been even higher if I had waited until Saturday to fill up because of my weekly 40 - 50 mile interstate round trip that I make every Friday (would have dropped the % of city driving at least 10%). However, I filled up today because today's both my birthday (triple MAPCO points toward lower gas prices) and the last day of my extra .03 a gallon bonus (making a total of .06 a gallon off). So, today it was.

I'm thankful this Thanksgiving for filling up YESTERDAY morning. Today, instead of 3.09 (before my .06 discount), gas is 3.24! A .15 jack in the price. I guess oil barons needed to pay for their turkeys.

My MPG has taken quite the hit since the switch to winter gas and with the temps taking a nose dive.
On another note, if your car is a manual, what speeds are you shifting at?
I have generally found the following works best for mpg;
1-2 = 10kph
2-3 = 30kph
3-4 = 45kph
4-5 = 60kph
For highway cruising I really think this car could use another gear, seems to have enough pep to support it.

Today: (Miles, gallons, mpg, price per gallon, % of city driving)
251.0 9.58 26.2 3.109 75%
Despite far fewer highway miles than usual, up 2.2 mpg from last fillup. I added in about 10 miles of "highway driving" because I had several fairly long 50 mph non-stop and go treks inside the city. Normally I get in two 50 mile round trip interstate trips per fillup, but only had one this time. Note - I usually do a substantial part of those trips between 70 - 80 mph. So it's less of an advantage than if I stuck to 55 mph. This should be considered a "constant factor" when evaluating my posts.

Checked my tire pressure today, and all of my tires were low. I've been keeping them at 36psi and they were all around 26-28. I brought them back up to 36. Let's see if the mileage ticks back up after the next fillup. I'm predicting another 1 - 2 mpg.
#57
Well, my prediction fell short. I didn't account for the 10 minute warm up that I had to do one night to get the ice off of my windshield. I think that offset the tire pressure adjustment. I lost 1 mpg.

31st fillup.(Miles, gallons, mpg, price per gallon, % of city driving) Down 2.4 mpg from last fillup.
2/6/14 236.0 9.47 24.9 3.009 75%
Low tire indicator the day after fillup. I brought all tires back up to 36 psi. This probably accounts for part of the drop in addition to the higher city driving percentage. My cumulative highway/city percentage is 42/58. 28.0 mpg is pretty respectable, but obviously lower than the official averages. I think that this is mostly due to the hilly terrain and a slightly heavy foot. Also, I forgot to mention that my plastic engine splash guard got crumpled due to getting loose and dragged for around 10 miles before I could get it cut loose. That couldn't have helped the average. How did that happen? My small under front lip spoiler got knocked loose a while back and I lost it a day before the splash guard dropped. This took out an essential support which caused the whole thing to drop and get dragged, bunching it up and getting jammed. I'll need to replace both the cover and the spoiler in the near future.

Speaking of the crumpled splash guard, is the little "spoiler" under the front lip integral to the splash guard or is it separate? In the picture that I see for the splash guard, it looks like it might be even though, as I found out, it is clearly a separate piece because it came loose from the main assembly.
