Accounting for the usual caveats of environment/driver and the like.. yes my tunes try to accommodate both ends of the spectrum.
In my estimation you would have to treat it as a very long term investment to make up the initial cost if one were to approach it from a purely fuel consumption conscious angle.
Because of it's diagnostic capabilities, it is made a bargain in my eyes even if no performance gains are sought. Again only justified in cost from that perspective if you intend to keep the car for a considerable period.
For me at least, it's a must.. even if I had no performance aspirations.

Mike... well DSM beat me too it LOL Yea you could even do a tune just for economy.
