Random jerking during acceleration
Hi,
I have a manual 2006 Honda Jazz I really love. But recently I have been experiencing random jerking when I accelerate. It feels like the engine loses power for a second in second or third gear. I feel a bit lost where this issue is coming from. Any idea what to look at or replace? Appreciate you help.
Cheers,
Zsampi

Periodic Jerking / "Sputtering" During Operation
Zsampi,
We have a 2007 Honda Fit Sport, and we love this vehicle as well! We have, for years, however, experienced what I believe you are referring to. Within the past six months, the problem has become more pronounced. Our Honda dealership / mechanic supposedly cannot duplicate the problem; has not been able to observe it occurring. (It surprises me that this was again the case at our very recent appointment, considering the current frequency of the issue.) We have described it as a sort of "sputtering", but your description of a jerking, is also accurate. It feels to us that the engine is not getting enough gas, as if something has become partially blocked. For us, this does indeed occur during acceleration, but it also occurs during constant speed driving and while sitting idle at traffic lights. Twice it has stalled on me at traffic lights, and a few times it threatened to. The problem has, at times, been aggravated by use of the air conditioner or defroster, and at those times will improve by turning off the a/c, etc, but the problem also occurs frequently when absolutely no auxiliary systems are being used. I too would be very interested if anyone has any insight into what causes this. Thanks!

There's been quite lengthy discussions about the symptoms you describe. Don't have first-hand experience but here's the other threads you might want to read up on:

More than likely its the spark plugs/coil paks failing. Especially if its more tan 40k miles

Thanks, Subie, for the links. Also to Mahout for the suggestion, which according to my Honda dealership, seems to be the issue. Sunday evening, for the first time, our engine malfunction light came on. It blinked occassionally at first, but then remained on. The few times I used the car Monday, it remained on, so I scheduled an appointment. When I started the car Tuesday, the light was off, but at two occurances during my drive to the dealership (around 8 miles in an around 14 miles in), it blinked twice. The diagnostic indicated a misfire. Switching the ignition coil packs changed the location of the misfire, so this was determined to be the problem. A new coil pack was ordered and I will have it in a day or two. I'm told this will solve the jerking/studdering problem. They tested some fluid pressures and such to rule out any fuel problems, since both I and the techs/mechanics thought it felt as though the engine wasn't receiving enough gas. I wish I had consulted this earlier...I may have saved a couple years of this issue by being able to direct the Honda guys to the source of the problem. My Honda Fit Sport is a 2007, and I purchased it new in January 2007. I have taken it for all the regular maintenance. I have taken it to the same dealership garage for everything to have a single point of responsibility. We have put approximately 84,000 miles on the vehicle so far. This jerking/studdering became more pronounced just recently, but we've been experiencing it periodically for approximately 2 years, and the Honda guys have not been able to tell me what it was. I am not aware of what the mileage was at the first time we experienced this, because I neglected to record that. Cost for diagnostic, labor, new coil pack, and install totals approximately $245. (I was told the new coil pack costs approximately $100.) We shall see whether or not this solution corrects the symptom.

Did you really live with that issue for two years? How many times during that period did you have your car in for that problem? I mean wouldn't they just start throwing parts at it if they couldn't figure out what the problem was?
