maybe someone cloned your car. people will steal plates from the same color/make/model car and put them on a stolen car. then they will sell it to someone through autotrader or ebaymotors at a cheap price to move it quickly

fyi

they'd need more than a stolen plate to sell a stolen car. people check used cars by their vins, not license plates. they'd need to get some legitimate vins or sell the car to a complete noob. they could use the plate temporarily, to move the stolen vehicle though.

the plates could have been used in a drive-by, as a getaway car, or on an unregistered vehicle. like if you own a same-colored fit but can't afford to pay registration, just steal another fit's plate every night (before it's reported stolen) and rock it like you own it. i do this all the time, not really

when I had my plate stolen on a previous vehicle of mine, I called the police non-emergency phone number thinking I won't tie up the emergency line. When I got through, I was told to call 9-1-1 to report it immediately. Reason being a valid plate is usually stolen to put on another stolen vehicle so the stolen car is not identified as quickly so that the vehicle (Not neccessarily another of the same vehicle) can be used to commit a crime.

Sucks though that I had to plate for another plate fee to get a new plate though.

Good thing about vanity plates they are less likely to be taken and the Mugen screws can only be taken off with an allen wrench.
