What will happen when the timing belt breaks?

The reason I ask is because in the April 2010 edition of Road & Track, a reader wrote to tech correspondence there and asked about changing the timing belt on his 1993 MR2. Road & Track told him "MR2 engines are freewhelling-non-interference-engines, so if the belt breaks you'll be stranded but the valves and pistons won't clash together."

So now I'm wondering if the belt broke on my 2007 Fit would I just be stranded or would the valves and pistons clash?

pt cruisers are like that too, my mom snapped hers and there was no problem, but if the fit engines are built like other honda engines, lets just say it would be a lot cheaper to replace it before it breaks

all later honda engines are timing chain with a oil pressure tensioner. no more belts. but if in general when you snap a timing belt it can destroy the cylinder head or bent valves.

Yep, the Fit has a timing chain. No need to replace for the life of the car.

Just be aware that the K20 in particular has had issues with the tensioner failing, leading to chain slack and engine destruction. There is an interesting article about it in the current issue of Honda Tuning. So if you are K20'd watch it!! LOL

It is usually when changing the camshafts. but skunk2 makes a fix for that so no need to worry.
