Honda Fit Sport 2007 model AT milage question
#21
The fact that you want to trade it in for that reason means you don't otherwise have any love for your Fit. When a car is rated 27/33 it's not realistic to expect 35MPG minimum, is it?

2008 honda fit sport AT one owner. Approx 36,000 miles. 104 fillups since new with overall mileage average at 33.33 mpg. I do not have a scan guage, just use the old fashioned method. I fill it till I see gas in the filler neck every time. Lowest 28 mpg, highest 37 mpg.
No complaints on this little jewel from me.

36,000 miles on 104 fillups is an average of 346 miles per fillup. you must pretty much empty the tank each time. Whew. Too close for me.
But our 2 Fit AT's get a little less overall, about 30 mpg with a range from 28 to 40 mpg.

I do run until just about empty each tank. I live in a relatively small town, put from 75 to 100 miles per day (five days a week) with 90% of it being in town (not necessarily stop and go, but in town), so I am always near a gas station and usually the same gas station so running out of gas is not really a worry. The most I have put in at one time is 12 gallons using the fill till you see the gas in the neck method (drives my wife crazy because it takes me so long to fill up each time). I have had several 400 mile tanks, but the norm is around 360 to 375. Been a great little car for me, good mileage, almost no maintenance, and fun to drive (even for a 60 yr old fart like me).

It's sad for us, you see, because you were expecting too high of MPG results while coincidentally you seem to be on the lower side of MPGs.

It might have a 10.5 gallon tank, but if you fill it till you see the fuel in the filler neck, it will hold considerably more than 10.5 gallons I can assure you.
ps. I don't know what a GD is, but as I stated earlier, it is a 2008 sport w/AT. Bought new with 8 miles on it and now has right at 36,000 using the fill method described and mileage noted.

GD refers to first generation 01 to 08 .
GE O9 To current.
I stuff the tank as well but there is no way you are squeezing in 12 gallons.
maybe 11.
This may also be a reason some of you are getting poor mileage.
My dealer TOLD ME THE FIT has a closed loop fuel system. It uses the tank fumes to start the car. I was told overfilling can cause raw fuel to contaminate this part of the system affecting performance.
I was told there is a hose about half to 3/4 of the way up the filler neck that runs to the front of the car. LOOK in the wheel well???
Has Honda officially addressed these concerns with regard to poor mileage???

I'm not quite sure how it goes in your part of the country, but in mine we don't call someone a liar just because we don 't think something is possible.
You really don't need to look in the wheel well to see the loop system, just look in the neck of the gas tank and you can see the small drain hole that goes to the tube you are talking about. I fill up to this level every time and have done so for every fill up. My gas mileage has not suffered, nor has my performance. Car has had all the scheduled maintenance checks at the local Honda dealer, with no problems whatsoever.

WHOA , RELAX MAN.
If you feel I am wrong then OK. SO BE IT
I Don't run my tank down to the dirt in the bottom.
Usually fill up when or just before the light goes on.
Generally get in 9 gallons and change. Maybe your process is more scientific than mine.
My intent was not to imply you are a liar I just don't see how there could be 1.5 to 2 gallons in the filler tube.
I was only offering the info my dealer gave me because it might help out others. If it came from a dealer Mechanic Might it be relevant??
As with all blog sites the info is take it or leave it. ( I don't care that you don't care )
Now that you explained your filling process I may be more apt to think it possible however I doubt I will bring my tank down to the point of SUCKING DIRT.
I am content with filling up with 9 or so gallons and getting my 32 to 37 mpg.
It's funny isn't it no matter how you approach it we are both getting the same results.

I don't contribute to very many forums, but when I do I don't offer opinioins or thoughts, I offer real life results. I do agree, the mileage I have calculated and the mileage you have calculated are very similar.
Enjoy your fit, because I certainly enjoy mine.

I didn't feel his post was that heated. I also would have been a little irked the 2nd time you told him that what he has been doing is not possible. "There's no way...." I think is what you said. The Fit holds more in its filler tube than most cars because the gas tank is further up (under the front seats). I can easily believe someone fits 12 gallons in the tank. I can't say letting your gas get that low is good for the engine, but that really wasn't your original complaint.

No hard feelings here either. I can see where the " no way " in my post could be taken wrong. I was just kind of thinking out loud.
But now I can see it being possible didn't think about the fact the tank is up front and the neck would be longer than in other cars.

Actually, the Fit (GD3) has a 10.8 gallon tank. I always stop at the second click (about .2 gallon after the first shut off), but it is possible to put more than 2 extra gallons in because of the looooong filler neck.
That said, the majority of mileage issues that one can have are directly related to how one drives. Thinking constantly about mileage and how your actions behind the wheel affect your mileage can make a big difference.

Driving back north there is no toll on the Barry Bridge and I took the Turnpike because I was tired and wanted the nice smooth straight shot home. Zipping along at 65-70 I got home with 150 miles on the trip odometer and well over half a tank of gas left, closer to 3/4. It would seem that the lack of stops and starts on the Tpke made a big difference mileage wise. I still need to top off the tank and see what I actually got, but right now I'm I think a little below 1/2 tank and around 200 miles on the fill-up so I'm expecting to see at least like 35mpg or so. From what I've seen so far, 300-350mpg out of a tank should be no problem for my Fit on the open highway.
-Update. Filled at 230 miles, 150 highway and 80 mixed, the last 10 or 15 being short hops around town where the engine never even had time to warm up. 34.01 MPG.

300 on a long trip with few stops no problem. The best I did was 330 but was afraid to run past E. YOU KNOW, PULL A KRAMER, take it to the limit. stop and go does decrease the mileage as on any car. one thing i Noticed was the tank empties very quickly once you go past 1/2 a tank. I get much better mileage on Jersey gas, not oxygenated. fill up on the way in to N.Y Do some hyper mileing to it really helps I got 37 mpg on a trip to Main with the car loaded and 2 bikes on the rear rack
#38
I was wondering about that. I tanked up in DE before I left. So that oxygenated BS gas is a stupid NY thing? I thought it was Federal.
#39
Yeah oxygenated gas is a scam you get less mileage and have to fill up more. Great for tax revenue
Also from what I can remember the chemicals they use to create the oxygenated gas once it leaches into the ground water will never go away. Needless to say the ground water here on Long Island is contaminated.
Maybe others can speak on this???

I got a 1200 mile round trip drive coming up. I'll track it and post back with ya'll what i'm averaging now. Been a while since I went loco on the interstatus so maybe I can do the 75 steady roll the entire trip.
I'd really like the 1200 miles to go as quickly as possible...so we'll see.
I head out Tuesday.
