Currently I have three pens stuck in there. They've never fallen out. In the past I've jammed my wallet in there, and also tucked gas receipts under the pens. I imagine it would also be useful for the following:

1. Slim-Jims (the 25¢ kind - I can never have enough of those around!)
2. Spaghetti noodles - uncooked
3. Pet garter snake - make sure you screen it in!
4. Twizzlers - do NOT confuse with the garter snake!
5. 12" length of rubber hose for keeping passengers in line
6. Plasticware from Wendy's - the kind that comes in a plastic wrapper
7. Traveler's version of pick-up-sticks
8. Cow tails (if you don't know what they are you're seriously missing out!)
9. Pellet food for your pet Llama (for those of you who read the Fit literature before buying!)
10. Spare shoelaces

On a more serious note, is there a way to take the rubber piece out for cleaning? It's a real pain in the tuchas.

open your glove box

look under you will see the rubber nipples underneath holding on to dashboard. They are what holds the rubber piece onto dash,
pull them up and wash in sink.

Hey....You always gotta be prepared...

a crackhead will break into your car for cigarettes
a lighter can explode from the heat (happened in my friends cadillac)
pens heat up and leak
chapstick melts (i know cuz i have a spot on my seat where i opened one and it spilled just below the crotch )

but i will agree its a perfect staging area for a dutch or philly

i personally keep a pack of chopsticks there lol

When im working I put my work Nextel in that spot, so its not jabbing me in the lag. It stays there just fine even with spirited driving

I have an orange metallic tire guage that matches my car, I keep there.
You could also put some like rolled candies there, like those SweetTarts or LifeSavers in single roll pack or something.
Not much use for anything else. I don't know what the designer was thinking on that part of the dash. Its terribly non-functional.

Is terribly a word?

I got my blue, "SoCal Honda Dealers Helpful" Bandaid Holder, with Honda bandaids inside, sitting on that ledge. Just in case.

si, they seem to get along OKeh, though sometimes st-christopher doesn't always stay on his side of the dash..
this is actually my 2d pair of guadalupe clippers; my 3 yr old seems to have lost the first one, i'm guessing somewhere down beneath the parking brake.. here's hoping that will make for some good karma down the road somewhere..? maybe i'll never have a parking emergency?

Don't laugh, it's helped avert many meltdowns from my 7 month old.
It used to be on that little flat spot on the dash between and the two windshield defroster vents, but I moved it for easier access.
