I dig it. I really wanted an older TDI golf, but refused to pay for VW maintenance / repairs. Then I found the Fit.
I still love the roundness of the VWs tho. I thought about the new rabbit for a bit when i was shopping, but not enough to test drive one, seeing as I knew i wouldn't buy VW.

 

My real dream car is the Lotus Evora. The VW is a car I can actually buy...well, someday.

 

Good grief, at over $30,000US it has no value as an econocar. Even a deluxe Prius is less.

dubs are bad ass - but i bought the fit because it was more practical.

 

I have owned three dubs: 1977 Rabbit, 1989 Golf GL and 1995 GTI VR6. The 2009 Fit replaced the Golf GL and I still have the GTI. The handling and torque are nice to drive, and they got good MPG for their time (33, 40 and 30 highway). But I am not ready for another dub.

The earlier dubs were easy to repair and modify (turbo or supercharger would be a rocket ship) and held up pretty well, but the GTI was trouble right from the showroom. The electric windows were faulty from the start and a terrible design that breaks regularly, not to mention the sunroof. The radio needs replacement every 2 years (used to get remanufactured radios for a fair price). The dashboard elecronics completely failed in 4 years just past warranty and was "heavily backordered" by VW. Nerf bars on the sides never stay on and I just gave up on replacing them. Front axles wore out around 60 K miles, ignition module, cruise control/trip computer and water pump failed. Presently the black paint is sunburned, engine leaks oil everywhere and the check engine light comes and goes. When it runs it is sweet, the styling is low key, but not worth the constant maintenance and high price/long wait for parts and costly labor (about $150/hr in SoCal).

Worst part is finding anyone to work on them and availability of parts. Dealers are worse than terrible, they don't want to work on the 1989 (too old), try to sandbag me and lie that they have the parts in stock (not). No owner of a Japanese car would put up with this kind of fahvergnugen.

Also the resale value is very poor compared to Honda. Seems that the 95 GTI was designed expecting it to belong to an adolescent who would total it before 3 years were up. It was never intended to keep for 10 plus years. Is the 2009 reliable? You can do worse but I'll leave it to someone else to find out...

 

They are genetically engineered to break just out of warrantee period, and the clutches don't last for shit, and are expensive to replace. The electrical gremlins in VW/Audi are insane. But seriously, honda should have brought the Accord Diesel, Tourer Diesel, Fit Diesel, and a number of other clean burning high fuel economy motors they are definitely capable of producing, with modular design. If only you could buy the 2.2 liter diesel with 150hp and 250ftlbs and do swaps into US spec cars. Or at least offer a 3.0liter diesel in the pilot or ridgeline. Europe has been huge on diesel for years, except people are worried biodiesels will put oil companies out of business, and people don't like the smell of diesel.

 

You are in the U.K. where V.W. manufactures the vehicles in Germany.
Big, Big, Difference between U.S. V.W. manufactured in Mexico, sorry to say,
they are not the same quality.
My Uncle from Mexico used to own a V.W. dealership in Puebla D.F. Mexico before he passed, so I am not totally naive when I say this.
Most of my cousins and my Dad (who lives in Puebla) own either Jettas or Rabbits, But my Dad really liked my Honda and his wife was really impressed.

My first car was a Brazilian V.W. Bug and was an aluminum can with wheels that you couldn't kill, believe me I drove through Panama like a demon on wheels.

For the same matter I would spend my hard earned money on anything made by the sinking ship called the big three, GM, Ford, and chrysler.not capitalized on purpose..
My last chrysler vehicle was a real piece of trash !!!!

For us in the U.S there are limited choices for me Honda was my best bet, especially my 07 Fit was made in Japan to high standards and of good quality material.
Everyone has their favs and mine is the 07 BOM Fit in my driveway.
