Transmission Fluid Opinions
Soooo.. I have a manual tranny and Honda recommended I change the MTF at 30k miles. Do you guys recommend? On my old car most of the people I knew did it around 10-15k because the tranny was fragile. I kinda feel like the shifting could be slightly smoother so I wanted an opinion and see what you guys are changing it at if at all.
And of course recommended Honda MTF. I heard you don't really need it but it's recommended. Any info on whether or not honda mtf is super necessary?
Thankssssssss

shit i did mine at 13k.
i am running gm sychromesh.its a GANG of a lot smoother.
i only run the best fluids in my car so i had to, i didnt want to wait.
but im thinking about using royal purple all around pretty soon.
amsoil is great my buddy runs it in his integra.
i might go through them since my team is sponsored by amsoil.

According to the service manual (p3-8) either manual or automatic transmission fluid is changed at service indicator 3. On the maintance minder display. That should normally not occur in less than 100K miles.
If severe service is encountered (hilly country driving low speeds) change the automatic fluid at 60k miles; if towed behind a motor home every 30k miles, either case regardless of mileage minder displayed.

I swapped the honda factory MT fluid for pennzoil synchromesh and it runs like it did the first day I test drove the car. Hopefully it'll stay like that. This synchromesh I think is just the non-GM labeled synchromesh - could be wrong, but picked it up from pep boys. As far as numbers, I believe you should look for 75W-90, GL-5 rating or higher. Synthetic FTW.

GL5 additives are just good to eat synchro rings! Tried Motul Gear GL5 in the Mazda and i tought the tranny was auto-destructing... flushed the shit and poured Red Line Mt-90 GL4 and it was like new!! look at GL-4 for a Manual Transmission and GL5 for a diff. as the GL5 additives are Extreme pressure (EP) additives...

im planning to change mine using factory oil when it comes time to replace it.
sometimes manufacturers will not warrant their trannies if the user
uses other than factory oils. plus the factory oil is good. i can shift
no problem in this frigged sub -12F weather. try that on older cars. lol

You make a good point. Using the manufacturers tranny fluid is going to be the baest route unless you know specially, and not some sales talk, that an alternate works. I doubt if any transmission fluid maker will guarantee their fluid in your transmission so you need to be dependent on HONDA specified fluids. And ditto change intervals.
