I just screwed something up...
I was pulling my headunit to install something in the cdc port. I've pulled it before with no issues. This time, upon pulling it, a copper piece fell out. Now the fan speed knob won't click. And a small piece of plastic that holds the electronics plug to the fan speed selector broke off. F**K
If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free, but this was mostly just me venting. it'll probably be at the dealership soon.

so i was some how able to get everything back in. it all works, but the fan speed doesn't click to 1-4, it slides smoothly across. I'll have to get it looked at, but at least it works for now.

you lost the ball. there's a metal ball that gets sandwitched inside the
switch to give it that detent feel.
funny you mentioned cause i broke mine too while doing the stereo install
following crutchfield's instructions. i HIGHLY RECOMMEND you undo
that fan switch harness before removing the entire unit out of the dash.
here's how i fixed mine.

yeah. i was able to get my hand back there the first time, then the plug fell out. I wasn't able to get it back in so i pulled the HU. It fell out a third time so i pulled the HU, and taped the plug in. Then the stuff broke.
Now my ipod thing only works every other time i start my car...i'm not sure why. Half the time the car won't recognize that there is something in the cdc port.
As far as fixing that. what is the red part you marked? should i just buy a new switch assy. its only like $20 on bernardi parts.
+1 for help. thanks.

the red part is the part of the sw that's missing. it tore off
completely so had to use tiny screws to put it back together.
there was nothing it could snap itself back together with.
kinda shows you my drilling skillz.

Well i'm just gonna order the part. I don't think my drilling skillz are as mad as yours. plus i think the ball that makes detent is long gone. I'll probably be ordering new clips too. It seems that 5 of the 7 are somewherere behind the dash.
Thanks for all the help!

np! yah, good idea to order new clips.
what i did was took clips from another car with the "L" in them, drilled
holes in the plastic tabs where the clips mount onto the bezel and
lock them in place. this way it will never(?) fall out again. hahaha

i was frustrated for a while, then stumbled across this post, and went back to my car looking for a little metal ball.
well, i didnt find any little metal ball, but i decided to take another shot at reassembling the knob anyway, and to my surprise, i was able to slip the copper plate perfectly into the back of the knob. i was able to push in the cable/component connecting behind it until i heard a 'click' and everything works fine again now.
i appreciate the information in this post, and hope my experience might be useful to others as well.
