07 FiT Quick Jerks @ 60mph
#21
So i have an 07 FiT, probally one of the first imported into the country (it was first registered in May of 06, i got it in Oct), has 48,000 (or will when i get home tonight), and lately ive noticed that if i'm cruising down the freeway at about 60mph, i will occasionally get a couple quick jerks. Now this is an occasional problem, i cant really reproduce it, just occasionally happpens (usually on I-5 NB at federal way). Like i said i cant really reproduce it for as much as ive tried crusing around 60, and it dosent happen if im going any faster. Never a drop in RPMs or anything, mabye the road and im overreacting, id ont know. but i dont want to loose my tranny, thats for sure. any ideas?

Course, your bump and mine may be different. Key is does the tach register an increase in rpm.
#24
not right
The bump is not normal, nor right. It really feels like I'm hitting a small log in the road or something. The dealership said they were able to see a skip in the engine while monitoring it. The skip happens at other times (the dealer saw it at an idle), but the highway with the cruise control on is when it is most easily replicated.

Does the engine downshift? Watch the tach not the gear indicator.
Sounds like an ECU problem. Did they try replacing it?

I've had it skip while sitting at a stop sign, though it will ONLY skip if its in gear with my foot on the brake, not if the car is in park (I have tested this).
On the highway the order of events is:
1) driving at 72 mph on cruise control
2) slight hill starts
3) feel the "bump" (no indication of anything happening on the tach - no downshift before the bump)
4) wait 3-4 seconds
5) car accelerates
6) car downshifts
Does that still sound like an ECU problem? (and thanks for your interest and help!)

Yes, it does. The grade program is probably involving a level device to tell the ECM that an uphill is beginning and do downshift to maintainspeed though I don't actually know that. Only a new ECM can solve it and not garanteed either.
When you have the skip at a stoplight is the car pointed uphill? Especially at a low angle. If thats the case I'd look for problems with the program downshifting. That miss woukld not be a problem in going anywhere but just a transition skip. I've spent months tracking down such skips in my programming, unfortunately not often with success. Only replacing the module solved the problem; assumeably because the program didn't lose any electrons from the transistor / connections. Its hard to count them little things.
I still say a substituted ECM is needed for a valid test if its not a coil, plugs, or timing sensor.

WELCOME to the same problem that many of us have also, especially me and oofie and about 10 other fitfreakers. We call it a "hiccup" or a "stutter" butyeah when ur cruising at a low rpm, it feels like u hit something in the road and it makes the engine hiccup. It also happens randomly during idle or maybe on slow acceleration. It probably happens a LOT more often if u turn on the A/C. I have narrowed it down to the coil packs or the injectors because i have gone through 2 sets of spark plugs and both of them give me the same results. Just today, i got a bad set of hiccups that gave me a check engine light. The car now runs horrible, like it's misfiring. I took the car to pep boys to get it the code (becasue for some reason my code reader wasn't giving it to me) and they told me that i'm getting a misfire on cylinders 1, 2 AND 3. Now i'm going to clean out my injectors to see if that's the problem because i really do not want to fork over $85 PER coil pack to only find out that it was the injectors. Sigh......

Cylinders
When the shop saw the skips, they said it was happening on random cylinders as well. They proceded to tell me that they found a loose connector on cylinder 4 and proclaimed problem solved. Obviously not the case. When they cleaned the injectors and adjusted the valves it did seem to go away for a short period of time, though its tough to say that for sure since its so intermittent.
When I've had skips at stop lights the car was level - or at least to my eye. One time I was waiting for my daughter for an extended period and tried a bunch of things at idle. AC definitely makes it happen more often, though it will happen without the AC on. If the car is in Park or Neutral, it does not happen, or at least it didn't happen when I was sitting there waiting that time.
While it sucks that there are others having this same problem, at least through reading these other accounts I am getting more of a sense of what is happening. Hopefully one of us gets lucky and we can share the success.

wow i thought i was the only one with this problem, i took it to the dealership, i mean stealership and they told me nothing was wrong, i can only replicate these hiccups when im cruising on the freeway, and they told me nothing was wrong under "normal driving conditions"...im really fortunate it doesnt happen as much as you guys, but i only have 20k miles

Just to be clear, this happens maybe 5 or 6 times in a two hour trip... less often (or it's less noticeable) in drives around town or shorter trips. Its not to the point where I'm thinking about selling the car or anything close to that.

man this is crazy! i've had my a/t for over 40k and i've not encountered this yet, and a lot of my drive is highway.
i'll be on the look out now, you guys got me nervous! all these crap problems that the dealer can't replicate are the worst.

51,000 miles on the car, and today was a real bad episode. All on the freeway, all at around 2000-2500rpm, crusing at 60mph problem went away when i stepped on the pedal and got it about 3000... after turning the car off and back on after making a stop or two problem seemed to clear up for now. Im not getting a check engine light, and im not dieing, and i certainly dont want to take it in the shop and spend lots of money on nothing. what do you guys think i should do? Still go the warrenty but would this be covered?

it apparently is turning into a problem for the Fit: one or more bad spark coils. It has been reported by many posters at around 48,000 miles and at least twice the solution was replacing the coils. Unfortunately they're not cheaop so as soon as you experience that stutter report IMMEDIATELY to your dealer and have a service report written.

I wonder if Honda corporate is aware of this? It seems to be a problem to some degree, but based on the number of posts in this thread I doubt very many Fits are experiencing this problem - or maybe people just don't notice it.
By comparison when the tranny went on my 02 Odyssey I did a Google search and hundreds of complaints popped up across MANY websites (ultimately Honda replaced the tranny even though it was out of warranty!). I also had an ignitor go bad in a Civic many years ago, again Honda replaced it free of charge (and paid for my tow) even though that car was out of warranty as well.
Based on my past experience with the local dealer they want to see it happen and find the problem before they go swapping out parts, which I understand. However, if Honda corporate issues a service bulletin the local dealer will act quickly. Any of you guys who work at shops know if Honda Corporate knows about this or what the process is to make them aware?

Finally got a check engine light breifly appearing last night, so i will take it into the shop with a copy of this page. Shes got a warrenty to 90,000. I'm sure they will try to bend me over anyway, but hopefully i can atleast get the parts for free (while paying for the labor, which is more expensive than the parts - which is usually the way these warrentys work).
