How do you deal with 3,500 +/- rpm @ 70 mph?
Hello all,
Test drive 2012 Fit 5M/T today. Love the car, space and price. But once I hit the Interstates all of that just went down the drain. I only drove it for 2 exists and that was enough to annoyed me. I went in with check book ready but ended up walking away.
I wanted daily car, I will have to spend about 40 min to and another 50 + min back from work in 70-75 mph zone . Sure, posted speed limit is 65 mph but if I do 65 I will get run over.
My 2002 Camry with 4 A/T was doing 2,100 rpm at the same speed granted 2.4 L have more torque and perhaps a lot taller final drive ratio.
How do you people dealing with daily Interstates commute? Does it bother you guys?
Fit 5 A/T probably drop about 4-600 rpm but probably don't have enough power. From my house to my office I have to climb two mountains – not hills and no joke.
I am also considering Kia Forte 5 doors and Golf TDI. TDI probably cost more than what I would like to spend. Well for right now anything is better than 17 mpg highway I am getting from my aging 2005 E55 AMG.
I do believe next Fit should have 6 speeds. I won't mind paying extra if it will be an optional.
Please help me like the 2012 Fit as it still sitting on the lot!!

Hondas in general are higher-revving cars. I have a CRX that sits at about 4200 @70MPH (not the stock engine/tranny). If it annoys you, not much can be done. Keeping in mind the fact that these engines are designed to rev high makes it easier to cope though. Good luck in your car search!

I drive at high speeds in my MT fit and it definitely doesnt bother me. I even have an exhaust. I love the passing power of the fit without having to drop a gear. I drive to Dallas often (60 miles) and to my parents'. (250 miles) and have not one been bothered by the high rpms. This is a really fun car to drive and I chalk up the high freeway rpms to part of that experience.

Having mostly owned domestics with much larger motors it took a changing of my thought process to get over the highway rpm. It's not hurting the car in the least, it's still getting good fuel mileage, and it's not that loud. Basically, you have to look at it as just a number on the tachometer.
Ours has spent countless hours on the Interstate at 75+ and does not burn a drop of oil or show any signs of mechanical wear after 60,000 miles.

How does someone find that sound annoying? Do you have hyper sensitive hearing or are you just too used to your snore mobile?
If you're that annoyed by the sound, do the unthinkable and *gasp* turn the radio up.

The drive home from the dealership I was a little startled since I didn't get a chance to test drive in on the highway because I was in the city but it only bothered me for 5 minutes. I just turned the music up higher and that was the end of that. I like the high revs now so much that I'm looking for a S2000 as my fun car

you know you never actually said what bothered you about it being at that "high" of a rpm range. is it the noise? if it is seriously you went to buy a fit and expect lexus quiet? or were you concerned about the gas mileage? well if thats your issue and you commute alot, seriously get a hybrid. the fit in my eyes doesn't really get that great of gas milage anyways. even if you did get 35 miles to the gallon the tiny ass gas tank negates the frequency you'd have to stop at a gas station anyways.
on a side note, why'd you bring a check book? people still accept those? lol

OP, the Fit vs Camry is not a good comparison. mhadden's chart would be a more accurate one. How do you deal with it, is a whole new thread by itself -priorities, choice, preference, driving habits/environment. I'm ok with mine. Only time I don't like the engine taching high is when the wheels are off the ground.
